Steve will show examples of German painted furniture\, contrast those examples with painted furniture in the Pennsylvania Dutch style\, and demonstrate color blending techniques that are unique to the German style. \nSteve is a West Point graduate and retired Army lieutenant colonel and operates Dietrich’s Early American Furniture Reproductions (DEAFR) near Fredericksburg\, Virginia.  His work can be seen in George Washington’s replica boyhood home\, Ferry Farm\, in Fredericksburg.  \nA lifetime member of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM)\, Steve is descended from German cabinetmakers and conveys their pride of craftmanship into his work.  He served 8 years in Germany with the US Army\, commanding an Army post in Bavaria where the Germans treated him as a Burgermeister (Mayor).  During his last assignment in 1990\, he began his detailed study of period German paint decorated furniture and the painting techniques.  He holds an MA in History and has published extensively on military history and the history and reproduction of selected early American furniture. \n \n  \nWe will use the upper lot only for tailgating. It consists of tailgating (Friday and Saturday outside)\, a dealer tool sale (inside Hall) and a tool auction (Saturday inside Hall). The vendors/dealers for the tool show set up in the first two thirds of the building and the auction in the last 1/3. The lots are open for inspection all day. The lots usually feature antique tools\, planes\, chisels and the like but can also have user tools\, antiques\, collectables\, signs and even some scientific-type pieces. PATINA club members\, vendors and general public attendees all bid on lots they desire. \nOur auction takes place on the same day as the dealer tool sale and starts at 2:00 pm. His work includes leather cases\, bags\, belts\, sheathes\, and other personal sundries both practical and custom tooled. With a little under a decade of experience\, He is always striving to learn new techniques and improve on the ones he already knows. \nSean focused on identification and classifications of commercially available leathers\, to include tannages\, weight\, uses\, benefits and drawbacks. These as well as tool chest contents from a Culpeper estate will be up for sale. \nAfter the tailgating and mini-auction\, There was a presentation and demonstration by creative Artist/Blacksmith Drew Alexander. \nDrew takes the lead in the metalworking side of the Alexander Brothers family handmade crafts and fine furnishing business.\nDrawn to blacksmithing at age 13 when seeing a local blacksmith at a festival\, Drew got his start apprenticing at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton\, Virginia. For over twenty one years Drew has honed his craft through self-education\, learning and leading in his local blacksmithing community\, through books\, networking with other artisan blacksmiths online\, and being mentored by incredible craftsmen like Nol Putman. \nHe specializes in client led projects\, and prefers large pieces that allow room for artistic creativity and customization. After years in the fine home building and construction industry\, Drew stepped into blacksmithing fulltime in October 2021. From 2002 until taking the position at Mount Vernon in 2019 she was the owner of Oculus Fine Carpentry based in Portland\, Oregon\, where she specialized in the conservation and construction of 18th and 19th century windows and doors. \nSome notable projects besides Mount Vernon in Virginia include Heceta Head Lighthouse in Oregon\, and Fort Simcoe in Washington State. \nAmy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon and she has done post baccalaureate work in Architecture\, Historic Archaeology and English Building History. Hemmings was the enslaved Joiner of Monticello who’s work there and at Poplar Forest reflect Jefferson’s deep love of Palladian architecture as well as a convoluted relationship with the institution of slavery in the 18th century. This discussion featured not only the work of Hemmings but also took a closer look at how enslavement effected five generations of his family. Amanda also presented her reproduction of a surviving Hemmings piece. This program tied-in nicely with that of our last speaker\, Scott Merrifield who featured the works of 18th Century plane makers Francis and John Nicholson\, with special emphasis on Cesar Chelor. \nAmanda Doggett is an apprentice Joiner at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Southeastern Virginia. Mellon Curatorial Intern working with mechanical arts and household accessories at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He holds a BA in History from Christopher Newport University and is working to fulfill his thesis requirement for a MA in History from James Madison University. He was a 2016 summer intern in Colonial Williamsburg’s cabinetmaking shop. In his current position\, he has cataloged 250 eighteenth-century woodworking planes made by Francis Nicholson\, John Nicholson\, and Cesar Chelor. His current research interests are in trades and tools of early America. \nThe program summary centered on Cesar Chelor\, the earliest documented African-American toolmaker\, worked in New England as part of the first school of American plane makers. He learned his trade while enslaved to Francis Nicholson of Wrentham\, Massachusetts\, the first professional plane maker in the colonies. Upon his master’s death in 1753\, Chelor was freed by the terms of Nicholson’s will\, and opened his own shop where he manufactured planes which bear his name. The large quantity of his surviving planes\, of which Colonial Williamsburg owns 75\, shows that Cesar Chelor was both a prolific maker and a master craftsman. \nThis presentation discussed Chelor\, his work\, and the world he practiced his trade in. Reproducing a 19TH century long nose golf club is a natural convergence of these two hobbies and a golf motif finds its way into some furniture elements. \nElm maintains a woodworking blog\, Unique Tips for Hand Tools\, which includes posts on golf clubmaking. Each attempt at making a replica 19th-century golf club offers a chance to gain new insights into the traditional methods and history of clubmaking and woodworking. She performed with the Katahdin String Quartet and met many contemporary violin makers which inspired her to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a violin maker. \nMelanie moved to Boston and graduated from the North Bennet Street School with a degree in Violin Making and Restoration and apprenticed for several years.
