SUMMARY:PATINA January 11\, 2026 Meeting—Historic Restoration featuring Stephen Ortado
DESCRIPTION:The January 2026 in-person CLUB meeting in McLean VA\, will be SUNDAY January 11.  Start time is 9:00am. \nAt the beginning of this meeting we will hold an election to fill currently open Board positions.  We currently have open positions for Club President and Vice President.  Any club member who is interested may run.  \nLong-time club member Dave Murphy has expressed interest in the office of President.  \nIf you are interested in becoming a club officer for either of these 2 positions\, please let a club officer know\, or you also may declare your interest at the January meeting. \nThe President’s first responsibility is to delegate and oversee the auction segment of our March Damascus Show.  That person also has key input in almost all other club activities.  \nThe Vice President’s position\, along with also having key input with all other club activities\, is to arrange speakers and activities for the bi-monthly meeting. \nWe will also hold a raffle for new and existing members who have paid their annual 2026 dues. The winner will receive a $100 gift card to Woodcraft. \nOur Guest Speaker will be Stephen Ortado.  \nStephen has been a woodworker since college. For ten years he ran a boat yard\, building and restoring wooden boats on the Chesapeake Bay. He came to DC in 1986 and started working for a general contractor in historic preservation before starting his own business. His company\, Historic Structures\, is now 39 years old! Some of his projects have been restorations of The Lincoln Cottage\, Blair House\, Pierce Mill\, Custis Lee Mansion (Arlington House)\, The Old Stone House and many churches and private residences. Almost all of them involved restoring the windows as part of the work. \nStephen has started a regular schedule of woodworking classes and seminars to bring back skill training and renew next generation carpenters. Feel free to come to the PATINA meeting and discuss the class with Stephen as he explains the fundamentals of window repair & restoration. \n\nA salvaged\, cased double-hung window unit will be set up for discussion of what the component parts are and how to remove the sash from the jamb. Stephen will review common problems and best tools for every phase of the restoration process. \nOnce that is discussed\, he will go through the process of removal\, re-stringing and reinstalling the sash. \nIf time permits\, he will go through glazing putty removal and replacing broken glass. \n        Stephen Ortado\n  \nAs always\, we will use the upper lot only for tailgating. Please park in the lower lot if you are not planning to set up a table. Start time: 9:00am for tailgating. If there are enough consignments to have a mini-auction\, it would take place after tailgating\, approximately 11am.

SUMMARY:PATINA November 16\, 2025 Meeting featuring Kevin Enoch\, Banjo Maker
DESCRIPTION:Our November program features an extraordinary custom banjo maker\, Kevin Enoch. Kevin started learning about woodworking and old tools early on from his father\, a skilled carpenter and house builder. Kevin began building and restoring banjos in the mid-1980s when he worked at a music store that had a specialization in folk music instrument manufacturing in Cleveland\, Ohio. Kevin has been building and restoring banjos in Maryland since 1991 when he started Enoch Instruments. Kevin has taught inlay and engraving at Augusta Heritage Center and was awarded a Maryland Arts Counsel grant to teach pearl engraving. He has also done custom pearl inlay and engraving work for other companies such as Deering Banjos and Paul Reed Smith Guitars. \nThis demonstration will focus on the tools and techniques used to inlay designs in wood. It will include both cutting out and inlaying a design into wood. The technique\, while generally used by Mr. Enoch with shell\, can also be used with brass\, wire\, and other materials. \nCheck out Kevin’s website\, Enoch Instruments \n            Kevin Enoch\n  \nTom Brown of The Washington Woodworkers Guild\, will be video the program and post it on our website. \nAll WWG members are invited to attend! \nAs always\, Tailgating will begin at 9AM. The program will commence at 11:00 with a mini-auction. Bring some good tools or items that you no longer need. A minimum opening bid or reserve is permitted so we can improve the quality of items.  There is never a buyers or seller premium. \nPlease bring visitors\, spouses\, and any guests!

SUMMARY:PATINA July 13\, 2025 Meeting featuring Chris Swan\, senior conservator at Williamsburg
DESCRIPTION:The July 2025 in-person CLUB meeting in McLean VA\, will be SUNDAY July 13.  Start time is 9:00am. \nThe guest Speaker will be Chris Swan\, senior conservator at Williamsburg\, who will present a discussion on tool preservation. \nChris is a furniture and wooden artifacts Conservator at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia where he has been since February 1999\, and where he also completed his third-year graduate internship\, and a Getty post-graduate internship from 1994-1996.  In between positions in Williamsburg\, he served two years as the Mellon Fellow and then as Assistant Conservator in Furniture Conservation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Chris is a 1985 graduate of the University of Dallas\, and a 1995 graduate of the Buffalo State College Art Conservation Master’s Degree Program.    \n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/xOdIFG_kLnA\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nThe idea to invite Chris was sparked after reading various tool forums where so many guys were asking if they should clean a tool\, or how to clean it\, and the responses were often conflicting and unclear.  Chris supported the CW exhibit “Tools\, Working Wood in 18th Century America” that was led by Jay Gaynor. CW also houses the largest collection of Cesar Chelor and Nicholson planes so Chris is well aware of our passion and care for antique tools.\nJoin us for slides and a discussion on caring for tools from a Museum Objects Conservator’s perspective. Examples of museum and collecting applications will be illustrated alongside practical recommendations for hand tools –whether for collecting or use. \nSome questions we’ll explore are:\nWhat’s the difference between cleaning and polishing and when should they be employed?\nWhat are some options for cleaning or converting rusted iron?\nHow should I polish brass?\nDoes Electrolysis work?\nCan I replate lost metal?  \nWe’ll break down some basic concepts\, learn to identify and differentiate some treatments\, and dispel some old wives’ tales.   \nChris Swan\nWe have invited the Washington Woodworker’s Guild to join us for this event\, and we hope to record the content for posting on our websites. \nPlease bring visitors\, spouses\, and any guests!\nLocation: American Legion Post 270\, 1355 Balls Hill Rd\, McLean VA.\nThe tailgating begins around 9AM and the indoor meeting will commence at 11:00 with a mini-auction which we have not held recently. Bring some good stuff that you no longer need. No fee. \nAs always\, we will use the upper lot only for tailgating. Please park in the lower lot if you are not planning to set up a table. Start time: 9:00am for tailgating.   \n

SUMMARY:PATINA May 18\, 2025 Meeting "Tool trading Part deux!"
DESCRIPTION:The May 2025 in-person CLUB meeting in McLean VA\, will be SUNDAY May 18.  Start time is 9:00am. \nFor this meeting\, we will concentrate on tool trading\, always one of our more popular events. \nQuite a few people indicated that they missed the March event\, and others regretted that the rain caused the tailgate activity to end early. Many requested another opportunity to trade tools\, so the May meeting will be an extended tool trading opportunity. \nA few of our members have indicated that they will be bringing some nicer tools for the mini-auction\, so we will hold that inside the hall after the tailgating ends\, about 11am. \nAs always\, we will use the upper lot only for tailgating. Please park in the lower lot if you are not planning to set up a table.  The mini-auction will take place after tailgating\, approximately 11am.  We will tailgate outside\, weather permitting\, at around 9AM.  If the weather is sketchy\, a tailgater may move a limited number of tools inside.  The mini-auction would be held inside. \nAlso\, at this meeting we will discuss the impending open club officers positions and ask for people to fill them.  These two positions are possibly the most important of the club; the club’s actual future could be at risk.

SUMMARY:The 45th Annual Tool Show and Auction is now set for March 15\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Tool Show and Auction date has been announced for the weekend of March 14 and 15th 2025! \nAs always setup and early entry will be Friday\, March 14th with the actual show and auction to commence Saturday\, March 15th. \nThe Dealer Tool Sale and Auction will be held rain or shine\, wind or snow and is open with free admission to the general public.  It consists of tailgating (Friday and Saturday outside)\, a dealer tool sale (inside Hall) and a tool auction (Saturday inside Hall). The vendors/dealers for the tool show set up in the first two thirds of the building and the auction in the last 1/3. The lots are open for inspection all day. The lots usually feature antique tools\, planes\, chisels and the like but can also have user tools\, antiques\, collectables\, signs and even some scientific-type pieces.  PATINA club members\, vendors and general public attendees all bid on lots they desire. \nAt the 2024 event\, there were 37 vendors set up selling their wares\, answering questions and helping to create a joyful event.  There were many more vendors set up in the outside tailgating section as well. Plan to attend the largest tool event in the country. If the weather cooperates\, tailgaters\, dealers and auction tables cover a half mile of tools! Tailgate setup is free for sellers\, but a nominal ($10-15) donation to the club to help cover facility costs is appreciated. Several tailgaters arrive Friday\, the majority arrive during the early morning on Saturday. \nFor vendors wishing to sell their tools\, it seems that with the unusually cold winter and increased snow levels\, several outdoor sellers are choosing to come inside to the hall.  The INDOOR Vendor selling area continues to fill up fast.   \nINDOOR table selling also allows early access to other inside sellers and their goods on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning before the Hall opens.  \nClick here for more information about the event\nThere is still space at this point\, however sellers considering the move INSIDE the hall should make reservations soon.  Please see the attachments below and reach out to Dave Murphy at murphydave1898@gmail.com. if interested. \n\n2025 Dealer letter from Dave Murphy\n2025 Dealer Table Reservation Form (Inside Hall)\n\nFor those interested in bidding in our auction\, lots are open for inspection all day. The lots usually feature antique tools\, planes\, chisels and the like but can also have user tools\, antiques\, collectables\, signs and even some scientific-type pieces.  PATINA club members\, vendors and general public attendees all bid on lots they desire.  For this years auction\, we have received approximately 300 quality lots and are now at capacity; we have stopped accepting new auction consignments.  This 2025 auction is shaping up to be the best we’ve had in a number of years.   \nSome of the items to be auctioned include multiple Stanley 113 compass planes; multiple Stanley 45’s with cutters; a Sargent 1080 with cutters; Stanley A6; Stanley Bedrock 604\, 605 & 606;  multiple Stanley 66 hand beaders; Stanley 55 with cutters; multiple planes made by Lie-Nielsen. \nClick here to see a complete listing of all 2025 auction lots\nClick here to see pictures of auction lots\nThis year\, we will be holding the auction one hour earlier than previous years.  We will start the auction activities at 1pm.  \nAs always at our PATINA tool shows and auctions\, you do not need to be a club member to bid on any auction items and there is never a buyers premium.   The auction is completely live; there is no on-line or phone bidding. \nHigh quality Consignments for 2025 came in at a steady pace: we have some really nice items for this auction.  This week it was decided that we had received as many as we felt we could handle in a reasonable time-oriented basis so as of February 22 we have decided to suspend accepting any new lots for the auction. \nWe are thankful to the PATINA members and families as well as other parties who have donated or submitted items for sale at auction so far. \nWith our fee only 15%\, PATINA continues to be a great and inexpensive way to consign tools to users and collectors

SUMMARY:PATINA January 12\, 2025 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The January 2025 in-person CLUB meeting in McLean VA\, was held SUNDAY January 12 with the usual Start time of 9:00am. \nThe weather was very cold and windy\, so tailgating was moved inside.  The meeting commenced around 11:00 with a robust mini-auction\, with a few of the highlights below: \nMini auctioning a Stanley Number 113\nMini auctioning a nice early rip saw\nMini auctioning a Millers Falls Number 22 jointer plane\nMini auctioning a Lie-Nielsen number 40 1/2 scrub plane\nMini auctioning a lot of marking gauges\n  \nAfter the mini-auction\, club member Dave Kerley won the raffle for a tool chest made by the late Tom Law that was purchased at our Damascus Annual event then donated to our group by a gracious buyer.  The tool chest is extremely well made with several types of joinery visible. SUMMARY:PATINA September 15\, 2024 Meeting featuring returning speaker Greg Ricketts
DESCRIPTION:The September 2024 in-person CLUB meeting in McLean VA\, will be SUNDAY September 15.  DON’T FORGET OUR NEW START TIME–9:00am!! \nBack by repeated request will be Greg Ricketts.  Greg was guest speaker at a past meeting in 2022 and we are very fortunate to have him return to speak to our PATINA group. \nGreg hosts a wonderful and very informative website\,  A Plane Life\, as well as a considerable following on social media and has posted many studies of how to collect\, date and restore vintage tools.  \nFor the September meeting\, he will present a hands-on demo focusing on “The Combination Plane: Practical Use presentation/workshop” \nThe attractive combination planes\, such as the venerable Stanley 45\, are often found unused or nearly unused.  After the excitement of purchasing one\, the many screws\, depths stops\, rods\, irons\, and cams often leave their owners perplexed and the planes gathering dust.   \nWhile these tools can be a bit intimidating\, and finicky\, they can also be useful and a lot of fun to use.  Greg will have a wide variety of Stanley 45 and copies of this design on display\, including some very rare versions\, as well as demonstrating how to sharpen\, setup and put to use a variety of different irons.  This will be a hands-on event where you can put plane to wood and experience the joy of creating unusual shaving and profiles.  Don’t miss the chance to see and use the uncommon Stanley 45 hollows and rounds soles\, window sash cutters (you will be helping Greg actually produce some sash for a repair he is working on)\, as well as the more common grooving and plough cutters.   \nJoin us for the fun! Several members are planning to bring their combination planes and parts to sell so this is an opportunity to see the planes perform and pick up one to use. Thanks to Matt Cottrell and John Davis for providing workbenches for the event. \nOriginally from Mesa\, Arizona Greg grew up in a hands on\, do-it-yourself household where his father built or repaired virtually everything around the house and expected the same from his son. \nHe studied biology and genetics at University of New Mexico while working as a scientific glass blower and glass lathe operator. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2018 as the Director of Leadership Development and Labor. \nAround the time of his retirement\, he became deeply interested in cast iron bench planes and began researching the in-house brands of tools sold by Sears\, Roebuck & Co. from 1902 to present. \nHe has authored articles and/or type studies on Fulton\, Merit\, Dunlap\, and Craftsman cast iron bench planes as well as providing instruction on traditional japanning of cast iron tools\, authoring multiple articles on the subject. His web site\, A Plane Life\, features a free research library on antique hand tools\, japanning information and products\, blogs and videos on hand planes and a large number of links to other hand tool sites. \nBecause of his interest in Hardware and Department Store branded hand tools\, He has owned\, restored\, and used a wide variety of manufacturers planes including Stanley Rule & Level\, Siegley Tool Company\, Sargent & Company\, Ohio Tool Company\, Union Manufacturing Company\, Hibbard\, Spencer & Bartlett\, Buckeye Saw Vise Company\, Shelton\, Vaughn & Bushnell\, Schmachtenberg und Türck\, Gebr. Kunz\, Millers Falls Tool\, Peck\, Stowe & Wilcox\, E.C. Sterns\, Record\, and Clifton. \nHe currently lives with his wife in Alexandria\, Virginia in a 225-year-old historic home where the 100 year old auto garage serves as his shop. \n \n                                                                                Greg Ricketts \nAs always\, we will use the upper lot only for tailgating. Please park in the lower lot if you are not planning to set up a table. Start time: 9:00am for tailgating\, with a mini-auction to take place approximately 12 noon. \nAfter the tailgating and mini-auction\, The club will feature the presentation and demonstration. SUMMARY:PATINA January 14\, 2024 Meeting Featuring Lee Richmond
DESCRIPTION:The next in-person CLUB meeting in McLean VA\, will be SUNDAY JANUARY 14. We will use the upper lot only for tailgating. Please park in the lower lot if you are not planning to set up a table. Start time: 8:30 for tailgating\, with a mini-auction to take place approximately 11am\, immediately followed by the guest presentation. \nOur January 14 program will be about infill planes. We are very pleased to have Lee Richmond as our featured speaker. Lee is past VP of PATINA and was the expert tool appraiser for Antiques Road show. Lee has been collecting and dealing in antique tools for nearly 40 years. For the last 27 years\, he has operated TheBestThings.com\, an Internet based business focused on offering a carefully curated selection of tools and other products.\nFollowing in the footsteps of his mentor\, Don Wing of the Mechanick’s Workbench\, Lee has always focused on quality\, not quantity\, offering the best examples of tools that he can find. Infill planes have always been a particular specialty. The talk will offer a description of the various forms of these planes\, their history\, and what to look for in buying them\, including a forthright discussion of fakes and frauds in the tool world. We welcome attendees to bring infill planes from their collection. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n\nLee Richmond

SUMMARY:PATINA Sept 2021 Meeting (Amanda Doggett)
DESCRIPTION:The guest presentation featured Amanda Doggett\, who presented a lecture entitled “John Hemmings: A Life and Work Under the Institution of Slavery“. Hemmings was the enslaved Joiner of Monticello who’s work there and at Poplar Forest reflect Jefferson’s deep love of Palladian architecture as well as a convoluted relationship with the institution of slavery in the 18th century. This discussion featured not only the work of Hemmings but also took a closer look at how enslavement effected five generations of his family. Amanda also presented her reproduction of a surviving Hemmings piece. This program tied-in nicely with that of our last speaker\, Scott Merrifield who featured the works of 18th Century plane makers Francis and John Nicholson\, with special emphasis on Cesar Chelor. \nAmanda Doggett is an apprentice Joiner at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Southeastern Virginia. Her research focus outside of traditional joinery focuses on marginalized groups in the workforce\, namely women\, black Virginians\, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. She is a two-time ERHI Professional Development Grant recipient\, a one-time Gonzales Field Experience grant recipient\, a Certified Interpretive Guide with the National Association for Interpretation\, and a fellow with the International Center for Jefferson Studies in Charlottesville.

SUMMARY:PATINA July 2021 Meeting (Scott Merrifield)
DESCRIPTION:The guest presentation on July 11 featured Scott Merrifield\, who is an Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Intern working with mechanical arts and household accessories at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He holds a BA in History from Christopher Newport University and is working to fulfill his thesis requirement for a MA in History from James Madison University. He was a 2016 summer intern in Colonial Williamsburg’s cabinetmaking shop. In his current position\, he has cataloged 250 eighteenth-century woodworking planes made by Francis Nicholson\, John Nicholson\, and Cesar Chelor. His current research interests are in trades and tools of early America. \nThe program summary centered on Cesar Chelor\, the earliest documented African-American toolmaker\, worked in New England as part of the first school of American plane makers. He learned his trade while enslaved to Francis Nicholson of Wrentham\, Massachusetts\, the first professional plane maker in the colonies. Upon his master’s death in 1753\, Chelor was freed by the terms of Nicholson’s will\, and opened his own shop where he manufactured planes which bear his name. The large quantity of his surviving planes\, of which Colonial Williamsburg owns 75\, shows that Cesar Chelor was both a prolific maker and a master craftsman. \nThis presentation discussed Chelor\, his work\, and the world he practiced his trade in.

SUMMARY:PATINA Nov 2020 Meeting (Elmer Nahum)
DESCRIPTION:PATINA is proud to present Dr. Elmer Nahum\, Author of Practical Clubmaking. Playing Bobby Jones’ home course of East Lake in the 1980s spawned Elm’s interest in golf history. Over the years\, he has studied the early history of the game as well as biographies of notable players. \nHis woodworking focuses on making 18th and 19th-century furniture using hand tools and traditional methods. Reproducing a 19TH century long nose golf club is a natural convergence of these two hobbies and a golf motif finds its way into some furniture elements. \nElm maintains a woodworking blog\, Unique Tips for Hand Tools\, which includes posts on golf clubmaking. Each attempt at making a replica 19th-century golf club offers a chance to gain new insights into the traditional methods and history of clubmaking and woodworking. The free time following retirement as an interventional radiologist allowed him to produce Practical Clubmaking\, his first book.
